In a rut
I am stuck in a food rut. I feel like I am making the same things for lunch each day for the girls. And I do not feel like it is the right kind of things for them to be eating a lot of. It seems like chicken nuggets and hot dogs are staples here. I need some help. What do you feed your kids?

Linda, It sounds like you enjoyed your trip!! I wouldn't worry about them having hotdogs and chicken nuggets most of the time. It's pretty much the only thing we have in our freezer (we also have Pizza Rolls). There's the occasional frozen pizza, but if I let her, Zoe would eat cereal for every meal (and on weekends, sometimes she does). We do alot of macaroni & cheese, not the box stuff, but EasyMac. It's so much easier and you don't have alot left over either. It's hard to make "nutritious meals" when there's only you and two little ones who don't eat alot. I know how you feel!! Maybe try switching it up a little and give them breakfast at lunchtime...waffles, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, cereal, scrambled eggs. You could also do this for supper some nights. Try asking Caroline what she wants to eat. Give her the choice between two things and let her make the decision. She'll love being able to think (& act) like a "big girl"!! If she wants to eat one thing and you and Kris don't, make something else for the two of you. There's been plenty of nights that Zoe's macaroni and I've had Chicken Kiev. I hope this helps!! ~heather
Okay, the health coach is going to chime in here. I have NO experience trying to feed children, so take my advice or leave it.
Whole foods. It's all about whole foods. If a particular food comes from a box or has a label on it, it probably isn't very good for us. GOOD FOOD GOES BAD!
How about grilling some fresh, healthy chicken breasts and cutting up the pieces? Fresh fruit and veggies? How about brown rice with some good dressing on it? Anything in its original form is so much better for us than something out of the box.
A good meal takes time to cook. I can usually figure out if I'm eating well based on how many dishes I make in the process. For instance, scrambled eggs and oatmeal in the morning makes a much bigger mess than grabbing a granola bar.
Okay, I'm done. Hope you're doing well! You look so good! Thanks for the recent photos of your trip to Vegas. You know, I only live about five hours from there, you were in my neck of th woods!
Turkey or chicken dogs are a good, healthy alternative (they have them just down the road from you at Valley Natural Foods). Sarah likes rice chips and hummus. We've been eating a lot of raw veggies from our garden as a big part of our lunches these days (it helps that she can help pick her lunch). Our cherry tomatoes and green beans are a big hit. Frozen waffles and apple butter are another one of our quick side dishes. -Monique
I am married to Kristopher and have 2 wonderful girls, Caroline and Grace. I was an EBD teacher before the girls and now enjoy being home. I am currently trying to find a way to use my voice in the world.
